The liquid latex is a perfect formula of pre-vulcanised latex, which can easily be brushed onto a variety of ceramic surfaces. It’s main use in ceramics is as a protective barrier for decorative stencils and the dipping of wares, keeping bases and other areas unglazed. Its ability to be easily peeled off, makes it an excellent choice for those who want their wares to go in the kiln without the need of wax.
Do not leave the latex on the ware when firing as this will burn and create an unpleasant odour and the release of toxins.
Liquid latex has other uses in the copying of simple small impressions, such as sprig moulds. Simply paint over your object in layers allowing to dry between coats. Build up your layers until you get to the thickness you require, then gently remove being careful not to tear. You can then use this as a mould with plaster, using a little soft soap as a release agent. After use, clean your brush with soapy water.
