Originally mined in Cornwall, the stone is a complicated mix of many ingredients. Its qualities have changed over the years, but it is known for being low in iron therefore white firing. It is still used as a secondary flux (used alongside other fluxing materials) in earthenware glazes, but in stoneware glazes it can be an alternative to more common feldspars.

Cornish Stone contains crystalline silica which when inhaled may cause long term lung damage, therefore we recommend wearing a P3 Mask. Keep working areas free of dust by cleaning up with a damp sponge.
In keeping with our overall general advice, we suggest wearing full PPE when handling raw materials. This includes a mask, safety
glasses, and gloves.
It is a sensible precaution for children not to work with raw materials.
