Product Information

A high-quality crank clay with a strong textured body for mid to large hand-building projects. Perfect for slabs and coiling, this clay is also good for raku projects.

Texture: Coarse

Unfired characteristics: Warm-grey in colour from the bag with an oatmeal fleck of grog which is visible in the fired clay. Stable throughout the drying process with low shrinkage

Fired colour: Buff grey

Shrinkage: 8.2%

Ideal for hand building and raku.

Firing Range

Ideal Bisque: 999°C (cone 06)

Glaze range: 1150°C to 1280°C (cone 3 to cone 9)

Working Notes

Working with this clay is a joy as it’s very forgiving, ideal for hand building and can also be used for raku, sculpture and modelling. If used for throwing, a course finish will be achieved.

The clay colour fires to a very light pink at bisque going to a warm grey buff at higher glaze temperatures. At high temperatures the fleck can still be seen but is very subtle.

Health & Safety

As the clay contains crystalline silica avoid inhaling the dust from dried out clay. Wear a P3 mask, wash hands after use and clean up using a damp sponge. Dust off dirty clothes and aprons outside.

Excellent substitute for my usual Craft Crank which is much 'groggier' that this clay for my outd...

Very nice quality clay, softer and more malleable than my usual craft Crank but results are excellent. the free delivery was a massive draw for me to try Hot Clay's goods!!

Not consistent between bags

Bought 2 bags for an order both very different in consistency one soft one very hard see below reply

Normally with clay like this a good wedging and bashing (throwing to the floor), it will loosen up. Hot Clay and all Pottery suppliers recommend wedging and kneading as a part of the clay preparation process. And remember with future purchases the Hand building clay is supposed to be a firm bodied clay.

Kind Regards

James

Happy surprise

I've been hand building for a little while and not used a clay such as this. It was the bottom of my pile of Vitraclay test samples. Well I'll be buying more! Next time it will go to the top of my list. Loved it so much.
